Sudan landslide kills over 1,000 people, local rebel group says

Khartoum, 2 September 2025 (dpa/MIA) – A landslide in Sudan's Darfur region has buried an entire village, leaving only one survivor, according to a local rebel group, estimating a death toll of over 1,000.
"Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand individuals, with only one survivor," the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) said.
The claims could not be independently verified. The group has controlled the remote area in the Marra Mountains in western Sudan for years. Sudan's Health Ministry did not immediately comment.
The landslide reportedly occurred on Sunday in the village of Tarasin. The SLM/A released photos showing mud and debris covering a forested hillside, along with people and mud-caked belongings such as blankets.
The group called on the United Nations and regional and international organizations for assistance in recovering the victims.
Since 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which now control much of Darfur. Other rebel groups, including the SLM/A, remain active in the region.
