Strengthening procedures for granting integrated environmental permits: workshop

Strengthening procedures for granting integrated environmental permits: workshop

Skopje, 30 September 2024 (MIA) - Integrated environmental permits are key to ensuring that every industry complies with standards and reduces pollution. We need to strengthen the procedures for granting permits, to ensure greater protection of the environment, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Izet Mexhiti, told the opening of Monday's Workshop on Environment and Climate Action organized within the IPA-twinning project "Further Strengthening the Capacities for Effective Implementation of the Acquis in the Field of Industrial Pollution".

Mexhiti noted that the industry is an important pillar for economic development, but it leaves serious consequences on the environment.

"Pollution from large industrial installations affects air, water and soil. It is our duty to control these impacts and promote cleaner and more sustainable practices," the Minister pointed out.

According to him, the EU Directive on industrial emissions and environmental permits is a big step in this direction.

Mexhiti also pointed out that there should be cooperation with all partners, both at home and abroad, because no country can face the challenge of industrial pollution alone.

"Regarding this project, together with our partner from Greece, we aim to improve legislation and reduce pollution in the country. Only through cooperation and exchange of experiences can we achieve concrete and sustainable results," said Mexhiti.

Participants in the workshop noted that the implementation of the twinning project is a step forward on the path towards a cleaner and safer environment.
