Special anti-terrorism police unit ‘Tiger’ marks 44th anniversary

Skopje, 13 March 2025 (MIA) - A ceremony Thursday at the Ilinden barracks in Skopje marked 44 years since the establishment of the Special Anti-Terrorism Unit “Tiger”.

In his address at the ceremony, Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski noted the high professionalism of the unit, which, he said, is at the same level as similar top police units in Europe and the world.

“In our commitment to the promotion and modernization of the security sector that must answer to all challenges we face as a country, the role of the special anti-terrorism unit within our Ministry is clear and very significant,” the Minister said, stressing the unit would receive all support and dedication it needs in order to improve the material and technical conditions in which it operates.

The Commander of the unit, Dragan Prokopovski, highlighted the role played by the unit and the various security tasks it carried out at the borders and within the country during the period of the dissolution of the Yugoslav People’s Army and the establishment of the Macedonian Army.

“Over the years the unit grew, it developed, it perfected itself to become what is today a highly professional, specialized, trained and highly equipped unit capable of successfully tackling all challenges that endanger national security and the security of the citizens,” Prokopovski said.

At the ceremony, plaques and certificates of gratitude were awarded to Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Interior Minister Toshkovski, head of Public Security Bureau Aleksandar Janev, National Security Agency head Bojan Hristovski, as well as United States Ambassador Angela Aggeler and other US Embassy staff. Plaques were also presented to the families of members of the unit that have lost their lives in the line of duty.
