Speaker to schedule presidential elections on Wednesday, maybe parliamentary as well

Skopje, 13 February 2024 (MIA) - Speaker Jovan Mitreski has told MIA he will schedule the parliamentary elections on Wednesday and is consulting with parliamentary staff if the May 8 parliamentary elections should be scheduled on the same day.

"The presidential elections will be scheduled on February 14, as this is my constitutional duty. The Constitution reads that elections are scheduled 70-90 days ahead. The first round of the presidential elections is April 24, which means that February 14 is exactly 70 days before Election Day. I have still not decided if the May 8 parliamentary elections will be scheduled on the same day, consultations with parliamentary staff are ongoing and if there are no obstacles, why not schedule both elections," says Speaker Mitreski.

He adds that if the parliamentary polls are not scheduled on Wednesday, it would be done in line with the constitutional deadlines, namely 70 days prior to Election Day (May 8).
