Sonja Simovska elected acting chief public prosecutor

Skopje, 22 December 2023 (MIA) - The Council of Public Prosecutors elected Friday prosecutor Sonja Simovska of the State Public Prosecutor's Office as Acting Chief Public Prosecutor.

Council of Public Prosecutors president Dushica Dimitrieska nominated Simovska, saying she has a long-standing experience in the institution.

"Simovska has proven herself as a good prosecutor, and she can successfully perform her job, considering her experience," said Dimitrieska.

Simovska has been elected acting chief prosecutor for a period of up to six months.

The term of current Chief Public Prosecutor, Ljubomir Joveski, ends on December 25. The acting chief prosecutor will remain in charge until the selection of a new chief public prosecutor, the procedure for which is currently underway.

Three candidates have applied for the position – Fatime Fetai from the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office - Skopje, Lidija Raichevikj from the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office - Skopje, and Ljupcho Kocevski from the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of North Macedonia.

The Parliament elects the chief prosecutor to a six-year term and is eligible for reappointment.
