Skopje, 8 August 2025 (MIA) – "Banks are the custodians of our salaries, pensions, other income, as well as our savings. At the same time, we are also their creditors," National Bank Governor Trajko Slaveski posted on X.
He pointed out that by borrowing funds from citizens and companies - most often at zero or minimal cost - banks provide a significant amount of funds to maintain their liquidity. "Therefore, fair treatment to citizens and companies in payment operations is the minimum we expect," Slaveski said.
The Governor also mentioned basic payment account services, which, according to him, should become truly functional and widely accessible for citizens. Under the proposed amendments by the National Bank, citizens will gain access to mobile banking apps, debit cards, cash withdrawals and electronic transactions for a monthly fee of Mden 36, while these services would be free of charge for citizens from vulnerable categories.
"Only 140 citizens have so far used the payment account with basic functions, and the reason is the limitations," aid Slaveski. Therefore, the National Bank is proposing legal amendments that will make this account accessible, practical and cost-effective for thousands of people in the country.
Other news include the possibility for citizens to use an overdraft facility through a basic payment account, as well as to open one without closing existing accounts in other banks.
"The goal is clear – true financial inclusion for all," said Governor Slaveski.
