Skopje public transport back to normal on Friday

Skopje public transport back to normal on Friday

Skopje, 21 November 2024 (MIA) - The Skopje City Council is holding Thursday an emergency session after the Public Transport Enterprise (JSP) was left without fuel and the city had no public transport over the past two days. After the Government's intervention, providing fuel from the state reserves for a week, bus transport in the capital will go back to normal as of Friday.

"Let me say thank you on behalf of the City of Skopje and its citizens because people will be able to go to work and students will be able to go to school tomorrow. I would like to urge everyone to follow this positive example because time has come for us to show the citizens that we are capable of stepping up and reaching consensus on issues that are crucial for their interest," Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska told the session.

She said the crisis did not result from improper management of the enterprise but an administrative procedure imposed by the Public Procurement Bureau.

"The public procurement procedure that was properly completed was cancelled by the Public Procurement Bureau, despite the fact it is a procurement of a key energy resource," said Arsovska.

The Mayor added that today the citizens witnessed something that "we have been talking about over the past three years".

"The Government and the PM stepped forward and the very same Public Procurement Bureau gave its approval for a direct contract so that JSP can supply itself with the fuel," noted Arsovska.

Only around 30 buses were operating in Skopje for the second day running, with citizens left to wait for hours at city bus stops.
