Skopje Basic Prosecutor’s Office establishes department for serious and complex crime

Skopje, 14 September 2024 (MIA) - In coordination with the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Republic of North Macedonia, the head of the Basic Prosecutor’s Office (BPO) in Skopje has decided to establish a special department for serious and complex crime that will deal with cases of crimes for which the penalty is life imprisonment and involve a larger number of defendants and a bigger scope of evidence, financial investigations, complex cases and cases of exceptional public interest.

According to the BPO, the department will be led by public prosecutor Vladimir Milosheski, alongside seven experienced public prosecutors from the Skopje-based Prosecutor’s Office.

The need for this organizational change, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, stems from the increased influx of complex cases in 2024 that result from several indicators such as the amendments to the Criminal Code, especially in terms of the crime of abuse of official position and authorization and the amendments for extended confiscation, which, according to the BPO, warrant a different internal-institutional organization and increased engagement of public prosecutors as early as the pre-investigation procedure, to ensure timely financial investigations.

“The end goal of the new department is to provide adequate criminal-legal protection of the citizens and an efficient institutional response to complex forms of crime,” the Prosecutor’s Office said.
