Skopje Airport’s radar back in service, says Transport Minister

Skopje, 25 September 2025 (MIA) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski told journalists Thursday the radar system at the Skopje Airport has been put back into service after a three-day outage.
Nikoloski said the radar system used by the airport is 27 years old. He added that the Government will adopt a decision to install a new radar system manufactured by Leonardo which has been delivered to Skopje but, according to the Deputy PM, was not installed since the previous Government did not adopt a decision over its installation.
The Deputy PM stressed the three-day outage did not affect the safety of air traffic at the airport, pointing to the fact that not a single airline cancelled its flights.
“The radar has been put back into service this morning and the issue is resolved. So, as of this morning, we have a fully functional radar at the Skopje Airport and all issues are resolved. I would like to say that we managed to resolve the issue in a record time of only three days,” Nikoloski said, thanking the Bulgarian air traffic control and the Italian Government for aiding efforts to resolve the issue.
In a press release on Thursday, the Macedonian Air Navigation Service Agency (M-NAV) reiterated that air traffic safety was never endangered during the radar outage. The Agency said the breakdown only resulted in a reduction of traffic at the airport in order to comply with international standards that apply in such circumstances.
