Sixteen years since Lake Ohrid fatal boat accident
Ohrid, 5 September 2025 (MIA) - Friday marks 16 years from the Lake Ohrid fatal accident, when tour boat "Ilinden" sank in the lake waters, resulting in the death of 15 Bulgarian tourists.
On 5 September 2009, the "Ilinden" boat took 57 passengers from Ohrid to St.Naum, but as a result of a mechanical defect, overload and panic, it capsized and sank at about 250 meters from the lake shore.
A memorial honoring the perished Bulgarian tourists has been placed on a promenade near the town of Ohrid.
