Siljanovska - Davkova: EU integration blockade considered serious security risk to Western Balkans and EU

Shtip, 18 August 2025 (MIA) – Blockade of EU integration processes, including our own, has the character of a serious security risk to the region of the Western Balkans and the EU as well, President and Supreme Commander Gordana Siljanovska – Davkova said Monday.

In an address at the central ceremony marking Army Day in Shtip’s Jane Sandanski military barracks, Siljanovska – Davkova said the nature of war has been changing rapidly and the galloping armament race has been requiring more investments in the defense.

The importance of self-reliance has never been greater, according to her.

“Amid the turmoil, we need to start, as we have already, to strategically plan resources and how to use them as soon as possible. The competent institutions should start considering long-term projects that guarantee self-reliance and defense development not only in peaceful conditions but also in the midst of war threat and potential conflict,” stated the President.

For over three decades, she added, the Army has been writing its story as the true guardian of the homeland.

“After the declaration of independence in 1991, the Macedonian Army has been at the disposal of the country and the citizens as a guarantee of peace and defense through its continuing reforms, assistance in tackling crises and emergency situations, by supporting civilian institutions in addressing natural disasters, including wildfires and floods. It has been doing it with professionalism, responsibility and with sacrifice. It is being proven by the high public trust it enjoys,” Siljanovska – Davkova said in her address.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi, MPs, ministers, former defense ministers and chiefs of staff as well as representatives from the Veterans' Union and the diplomatic corps attended the event.

The newly promoted 26 second lieutenants and 149 non-commissioned officers, who recently completed their education and training, were also honored.

President Sinjanovska-Davkova awarded the Cadet and Officer Training Center with the Order of Military Merit.
