Siljanovska Davkova: Battling for a state based on equality and rule of law, EU accession and in a world based on power not law

Skopje, 8 September 2025 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova extended Monday congratulations on the 34th anniversary of the country's independence, saying it is still facing internal divisions and crises, outside pressure and challenges, concessions and compromises that do not align with the 1991 referendum decision, international and national law.

"Today, 34 years after, in a world based on power, not law, we are still battling for a sovereign, equal, modern, standard, state governed by the rule of law, a member of the EU. Over the past three decades, we have faced numerous internal divisions and crises, outside pressure and challenges, concessions and compromises that do not align with the 1991 referendum decision, international and national law. Regretfully, politics teaches us that injustice is not removed by the stroke of a pen but arduous domestic and international struggle, legal arguments and cautious political activities, friendly alliances not hasty actions, internal unity not divisions, self-respect and mutual respect," says President Siljanovska Davkova in the note.

The President says she has never and will never give up on the Macedonian national interests, adding they must be reaffirmed and fought for, at home and abroad, in European and international institutions, through law, politics and democracy.

"The path to law and justice runs through a Europeanized state, based on the Copenhagen criteria, through democratic governance, checks and balances, competitive and prosperous economy, participative political culture, strong civil society and free media. Young people are not kept in the country by partisan politics but education and science. If our home is European, I am sure our children and grandchildren will want to work, create and raise their families here, or work together with their homeland if they reside abroad, be it temporarily or permanently. A European future is created only in a European environment," says Siljanovska Davkova.
