Shekerinska: It will be my privilege to serve as NATO Deputy Secretary General

Skopje, 19 November 2024 (MIA) - In a post on social media platform X on Tuesday, former Defense Minister Radmila Shekerinska said it will be her privilege to serve as NATO Deputy Secretary General under the leadership of Secretary General Mark Rutte.

“It will be my privilege to serve as NATO Deputy Secretary General under the leadership of Secretary General Mark Rutte. I am committed to working with all Allies towards an even stronger and safer Alliance,” Shekerinska wrote on X.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte decided to appoint Radmila Shekerinska as the next Deputy Secretary General.

“I am happy to announce the appointment of Radmila Shekerinska as the next Deputy Secretary General. She is a true believer in NATO, knows the work it takes to join the Alliance, and what it means to be a full member. I look forward to working with her as she takes up this vital role,” Rutte said in a statement posted on NATO’s website.

The appointment makes Shekerinska the highest-ranking NATO official from the Western Balkans.

She served as the country’s Minister of Defense in the SDSM-led Government between 2017 and 2022, when she played an important role in North Macedonia’s NATO accession in 2020.

Shekerinska withdrew from the Macedonian political scene in December 2021 following SDSM’s defeat at the local elections and is currently one of the vice-presidents of the Party of European Socialists.

She will take up her post as NATO Deputy Secretary General later this year.
