Skopje, 22 June 2022 (MIA) – The EU must give the green light to North Macedonia and Albania, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told the Bundestag on Wednesday, saying tomorrow’s summit in Brussels with the countries of the Western Balkans “will not be simple” while hoping that everyone “will realize their responsibility,” Deutsche Welle in Macedonian language reports.
Chancellor Scholz said he was not surprised that that the EU-Western Balkans summit risked being cancelled due to the refusal of leaders from North Macedonia, Albania and Serbia to attend, noting this is no surprise after so many unfulfilled promises to these countries.
“The summit was on the verge of being cancelled. To tell you the truth, this comes as no surprise to anyone. When you stir expectations, when you say that the EU path pays off, when efforts are invested, risking political conflicts in the country, North Macedonia even changed its name to solve the row with Greece, when all of this doesn’t help, then it is entirely understandable to see the annoyance felt by political leaderships and the citizens of these countries,” said Scholz.
In the remarks, the German Chancellor welcomed the French proposal and urged Bulgaria to leave the past behind and focus on the future.
