Saliu: International Romani Language Day a reminder is a sign of identity, dignity and spiritual strength

Skopje, 5 November 2025 (MIA) - International Romani Language Day is not only a date in the calendar but a reminder that language is a bridge that links the past, present and future of a nation. Let's not forget that every nation, people, community is part of the mosaic that creates the beauty of our country and Europe, said Minister for integration and implementation of the Roma Inclusion Strategy 2022-2030, Shaban Saliu, at an event observing the International Romani Language Day, held in the Government on Wednesday.

Minister Saliu said language is the most powerful symbol of belonging and self-respect, whereas the International Romani Language Day is a reminder that language is not only a means of communication but a sign of identity, dignity and spiritual strength.

"The Romani language has endured throughout centuries full of challenges. It transmits the collective memory of a people that has managed to preserve its culture, music, story and hope. This day, declared by UNESCO back in 2015, obliges us to preserve and develop the linguistic legacy of Roma as part of the European and global civilization," said Saliu.

According to him, Macedonia is a country founded on the principles of equality, multiculturalism and mutual respect.

"Therefore, the Government has set a clear framework, through the Roma Inclusion Strategy, to create a society in which every Roma citizen has equal opportunities for education, employment, decent living conditions and full participation in public life," noted Saliu.

Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said the Romani language is part of the cultural mosaic that enriches the country's societal identity.

"Protection and development of the Romani language means protection of the memory, dignity and dynamics of a community that has given so much to our society," said Gashi.

Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska said the Romani language is part of the country's common cultural richness that needs to be preserved.

"The Ministry of Education and Science is continually working on enhancement of the education process of the Roma community and creating conditions for sustainable learning, promotion and protection of the Romani language," said Janevska.

In this regard, she referred to the introduction of optional subject "Romani Language and Culture" in primary school, the increase in the number of Roma education mediators in elementary and secondary education, as well as the rising quota of scholarships for Roma pupils and students.

"These measures arise from the National Strategy and are not only short-term activities but sustainable public policies that strengthen the inclusiveness of our education system. We will continue to implement these policies in the coming period, because the Roma community is part of our society and contributes to its development. By strengthening the education of Roma, we strengthen the community and its role in society," underlined Janevska.
