Rutte: US President Trump committed to NATO's mutual defence clause

The Hague, 25 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Wednesday he is convinced that the United States under President Donald Trump would defend a fellow member of the alliance in the case of an attack.

There are doubts as to how committed the Trump administration is to the defence of its allies, after statements seemed to question Washington's commitment to Europe.

On Tuesday, Trump told journalists on his way to the alliance's summit in The Hague that there are "numerous definitions of Article 5," the article of NATO's founding treaty containing the alliance's mutual defence clause.

Article 5 of the treaty says "that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all."

Trump added that he would provide his definition at the summit and that he was "committed to saving lives."

"For me, there is absolute clarity that the United States has totally committed to NATO, totally committed to Article 5," Rutte said on the sidelines of the summit.

"Look [at] what the United States is doing, what Donald Trump is doing," Rutte said.

"They are spending almost a trillion on defence. They are by far the biggest contributor to NATO. They are delivering all the key enablers for NATO also here in Europe."

"They are an important ally. They are by far the biggest ally in NATO. They are 50% of the total NATO economy," Rutte added.
