Report accurately reflects current situation in country, says MEP Tonin

Brussels, 24 June 2025 (MIA) - After two years, we have finally succeeded in reaching a compromise text on the dossier concerning North Macedonia. Throughout the negotiations, I worked to ensure that the text accurately reflected the current situation in the country. The result is a well-balanced document, which effectively incorporates many of the amendments proposed by the members of the EPP Group, says the European Parliament's Shadow Rapporteur on North Macedonia, Matej Tonin of Slovenia, following Tuesday's confirmation of the report at the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) meeting.
"Particular attention has been given to the urgent need to adopt the constitutional changes requested by the EU Council in July 2022, including the inclusion of Bulgarian citizens in the Constitution. This step is an essential condition for advancing the accession process. I therefore call on all political forces in North Macedonia to engage in constructive dialogue to reach the necessary consensus, strengthen the country’s multi-ethnic character, and promote social cohesion," says MEP Tonin in the statement.
I firmly support North Macedonia’s path towards EU accession. Once the constitutional changes are completed, the process of the negotiations can start, adds Tonin.
