Record number of wildfires registered on Tuesday, 19 active 

Skopje, 30 July 2024 (MIA) - A record number of wildfires – 54, were registered Tuesday in the country, 19 of them are still active, while the rest have been either fully put out or placed under control, the head of the Crisis Management Center (CMC), Stojanche Angelov said on Tuesday evening.

Angelov said the fire raging in the Municipality of Pehchevo threatens the village of Negrevo.

A serious wildfire is also burning in the Municipality of Kumanovo, and it threatens houses from the village of Zhivine.

A blaze in Kratovo also poses a risk to houses in the village of Tatomir.

The wildfire in Sveti Nikole which has been raging for the second day threatens the village of Dolno Gjugjanci.

According to Angelov, there is a large wildfire in the Municipality of Makedonski Brod as well, and it represents a threat to two villages. The CMC said nine people were evacuated from the two villages on Monday. 

In a statement earlier on Tuesday, Angelov said the country has once again activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, requesting firefighting aircraft to help combat the blazes.
