Radev: Bulgarian government to present stance on French proposal, not parliament
Sofia, 20 June 2022 (MIA) – Bulgarian President Rumen Radev urged Monday the government to present its stance regarding the proposal of the French EU Presidency over unblocking of North Macedonia’s European path, MIA reports from Sofia. “The current approach cannot work. Bulgarian government should give its opinion based on the expertise of the ministry of foreign affairs and if the national framework position is updated in any way, it should be forwarded to the parliament for approval not vice versa,” said Radev. According to him, Bulgaria’s framework position of 2019 was confirmed by a government decision and then supported through a declaration adopted in the parliament. “There is real progress. The change of North Macedonia’s constitution is already accepted. In Sofia, we have never talked about minority but equality of Macedonian Bulgarians that they deserve. First a change to the constitution and then start of EU talks,” noted Radev. He added that the current approach of the government regarding the French proposal leads to blockade and no decision. “The body set to draft this decision is the government and the parliament should approve it, not vice versa,” said Radev.
