Public health debt exceeds EUR 100 million: HIF director

Skopje, 24 July 2024 (MIA) - The total debt in the public health sector probably exceeds EUR 100 million due to improper budgeting. Almost 80 percent of the budget is used for salaries and not much is left for other functions, said Health Insurance Fund (HIF) director Sasho Klekovski on Wednesday.

During a visit to Strumica, Klekovski said the hospital's computer tomography (CT) scanner, which covers a broad area, has been out of operation since March due to the fact it is outdated, whereas the procurement of new equipment "is not clearly divided between the Ministry of Health and the HIF".

"HIF is charged with maintenance and we discussed whether it is logical to repair a device that has been operating for 12 years at double capacity or procure a new one. I believe we will find a solution shortly," said Klekovski.
