Public bicycle service launched in Zagreb

Public bicycle service launched in Zagreb

Zagreb, 26 August 2025 (Hina/MIA) -- Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević on Tuesday presented the launch of a new public bicycle system in the city, called Bajs (colloquial for bicycle), with 500 bicycles available at 40 locations for residents to use when moving around the city.

The project has been designed as a complement to public transport, at an affordable price of €0.50 for half an hour's use, with subscription options of €5 per month or €30 per year.

By the end of October, a further 2,000 public bicycles should be available at 180 locations across Zagreb, with the possibility of adding another 1,000 bicycles also announced.

The docking stations are located along public transport routes, near schools, sports facilities and in densely populated city districts. The aim is to reduce car use, which means less congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, less air pollution and less noise, Tomašević said at a press conference.

The service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Bicycles can be used for half an hour and returned to any docking station. A mobile application is required to access the service.

The project is co-financed from the city budget, with the overall value of the contract covering all necessary services amounting to €9.3 million plus VAT, or around €64 per bicycle per month.
