Protesting Greek farmers to close borders with North Macedonia for several hours

Athens, 26 February 2024 (MIA) - Greek farmers from the north and northwestern part of Greece will close the Evzoni (Bogorodica) and Niki (Medzhitlija) border crossings to North Macedonia on Monday, MIA's Athens correspondent reports.

Farmers will gather at Evzoni border crossing at 1-1:30 pm Greek time, 12-12:30 pm Macedonian time. Traffic at the border is also expected to be blocked during the protest.

The Niki (Medzhitlija) border crossing, according to local media, will be closed from noon to 4 pm Greek time, or 11 am to 3 pm Macedonian time.

The reason for today's intensified activities is the meeting in Brussels between European agriculture ministers to discuss the new Common Agricultural Policy.

Previously, after the big protest on Tuesday in Athens, farmers decided that each bloc would individually determine its next steps, and the northern bloc remains the most active holding daily protests between 8 and 10 pm locally, or 7 and 9 pm Macedonian time, and periodically closes the Evzoni (Bogorodica) border crossing, as was the case yesterday.

President of the Agricultural Association from municipality of Peonia, Thomas Karipidis told MIA's Athens correspondent that yesterday around 100 tractors and 5 combines were parked at the Evzoni border, and explained that "a big agricultural gathering at the border crossing" is planned for today. ssh/sk/
