Skopje, 26 June 2024 (MIA) - President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova met Wednesday with UNHCR Representative Gabriel Gualano de Godoy, her Office said in a press release.

Interlocutors exchanged views on the current cooperation between Macedonian institutions and UNHCR, highlighting the importance of their expertise, as well as institutional and material support as key in strengthening the capacities for coming up with sustainable solutions for people in vulnerable situations.

President Siljanovska Davkova mentioned her time as an MP when she was actively involved in the adoption of laws prepared alongside UNHCR, expressing her deep commitment to solving migrant issues, while ensuring that the country's legal framework is aligned with international standards. She stressed that the country will continue to closely cooperate with UNHCR to save lives and build a better future for the people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflicts, exile, and climate change.

The President expressed satisfaction with the intensive cooperation with UNHCR regarding stateless persons. In that direction, she noted that amendments to the Law on Civil Registry and Law on Foreign Persons, as well as their practical implementation has helped over 700 stateless persons, expressing expectation that the country will be among the first nations in Europe to achieve zero statelessness, the press release reads. ssh/nn/
