President Pendarovski praises army, thanks EU, countries for helping put out fires
Skopje, 6 August 2021 (MIA) – President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Stevo Pendarovski on Friday evening visited soldiers at the operations center of the First Infantry Brigade located in a village in Delchevo region, one of the most fire-affected areas in the country.
They informed him about the activities carried out in the past few days and their tasks in assisting firefighting efforts in the area, the President’s Office said.
“I was told at the latest army briefing that the situation is under control. I hope the weather in the coming days will be to our advantage. We couldn’t have done it on our own. The army in fact was the spearhead of the joined forces from different institutions in North Macedonia. I have to also thank the countries that have been helping us in these joint efforts,” said President Pendarovski.
Majority of the army units, nearly 250 soldiers, will remain located in the region as it has been badly affected by wildfires in the past week. More will be dispatched if necessary to keep the situation under control, Pendarovski said.
President Pendarovski, said the press release, highlighted the importance of the assistance and support provided by Bulgaria, Slovenia, Austria and Serbia.
Thanking the EU’s Civil Protection Agency for its support, he said that the country was given access to EU’s joint satellite system that will contribute to early warning for wildfire outbreak in the country.
