Warsaw, 27 March 2024 (dpa/MIA) - Poland has recalled the current commander of the Eurocorps in Strasbourg, Lieutenant General Jaroslaw Gromadzinski, with immediate effect.

The Ministry of Defence in Warsaw announced on Wednesday on the platform X, formerly Twitter, that this was due to counter-espionage investigations after new information about the officer had come to light.

Eurocorps, a multinational headquarters, was created in 1993 on the initiative of the then German chancellor Helmut Kohl and French president François Mitterrand.

Today, up to 60,000 soldiers from Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, Spain and Luxembourg can be placed under its command. It is operational for both NATO and the European Union and is based in Strasbourg.

The 53-year-old Gromadzinski has led the Eurocorps since June. There were initially no further details on the subject of the investigation.

The top military officer told the portal Onet.pl that he had done nothing wrong, but did not want to comment on the ongoing investigations.
