Plea deal procedure under way for Supreme Court judge

Plea deal procedure under way for Supreme Court judge

Skopje, 15 August 2024 (MIA) – The public prosecution for organized crime and corruption received a plea deal signed by the Supreme Court judge Nakje Georgiev agreeing to effective imprisonment after being caught receiving a 10,000-euro bribe.

The length of the prison sentence will be determined by the court after taking into consideration the plea deal.

The plea deal, including all collected evidence, has been forwarded to a pre-trial judge at the Skopje Criminal Court, who should schedule a hearing in which the plea deal will be assessed. If deemed as acceptable, the court will deliver a verdict based on the proposed deal.

An investigation against two people was launched on May 20 when a Supreme Court judge was caught red-handed for “accepting a reward for unlawful influence”. He could be sentenced from one to ten years in prison.

“After an initiative for plea agreement was sent by the suspect N.G., a procedure for concluding a plea deal is under way to determine an effective prison sentence,” the Public Prosecutor’s Office has said.

On Wednesday, Council of Public Prosecutors member Ixhet Memeti reached a plea deal with the prosecutors and was ordered to serve one year in prison and was banned from the judiciary for three years.
