Pisonero: EU to work closely with Mickoski’s Gov’t, country needs to use momentum on enlargement

Brussels, 25 June 2024 (MIA) - From our side we’ve congratulated Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and the new ministers following the formation of the coalition Government, the European Union will work closely with the new Government in making progress on essential reforms and advancing on the EU path, European Commission spokesperson Ana Pisonero told media on Tuesday in Brussels.

“I think the message is pretty clear, North Macedonia needs to make the most of the momentum that exists on enlargement in order to move forward decisively on its EU path. I think that you are all extremely aware of what the European Council has made clear that it expects of North Macedonia and obviously this also relates to the constitutional amendments that North Macedonia committed to doing in order to be able to advance on its EU path,” said Pisonero in response to a journalist’s question about the EC’s position on Mickoski’s statements on the constitutional amendments, and the use of the constitutional name.

Pisonero added that the EU expressed its regret over the non-use of the constitutional name of the country “by some of its leaders”.

“This is clearly something that has been agreed under the Prespa Agreement. And it is clear that all sides need to respect the terms of the agreements and implement them in good faith,” Pisonero said.
