Petrovska: Helicopter replacement for Army modernization in line with NATO standards

Skopje, 21 March 2024 (MIA) – Defence Minister Slavjanka Petrovska, speaking about the details related to the procurement of new Army’s helicopters as well as the modernization with the new armoured vehicles JLTV and Stryker, stated late Thursday their procurement is in accordance with the long-term defence capabilities development plan 2023-2032, a document adopted on April 11, 2023, by the Defence and Security Committee and on April 26, 2023, by the Parliament, where it was precisely explained how the development of aviation capacities will proceed.

Petrovska, in an interview with Sitel TV, highlighted that the helicopter replacement is primarily for us and the modernization of our Army, in line with NATO standards.

“The continuous modernization of our Army is essential for the country to establish its own defence system compatible with NATO standards. This will enable our personnel to participate in joint missions and operations with other allies in the future,” she noted.

In terms of cost-effectiveness and the selection process of the bid, she explained that it pertains to the entire platform, encompassing both the helicopter and the additional equipment necessary for pilots to effectively execute their missions, objectives, and tasks.

"In evaluating all offers obtained from various manufacturers, the integrated project team, using a methodology and based on a matrix they have developed, identified the most acceptable offer that meets the operational requirements, taking into account both the price and the entire package. The offer from Leonardo was singled out,” she said.

Petrovska informed that the Ministry of Defence has not received a written letter from the State Commission for the Prevention of Corruption (SCPC) regarding the procurement of helicopters thus far. She once again welcomed the decision of the State Commission for the Prevention of Corruption to open the case, stating that, as she said, all information will be available for review.

Petrovska stated that she guarantees that there is absolutely no corruption within her scope of work, and that she has full confidence in all other officials involved in the procurement process.

Regarding the procurement of light armoured vehicles for the Army, the minister mentioned that out of the 96 JLTV vehicles being acquired, 32 have already been received. According to projections, an additional six will arrive in 2024.

Petrovska said that these vehicles are being displayed as part of the Open Days organized in cities across the country to mark the 4th anniversary of the country’s membership in NATO and the 75th anniversary of NATO’s founding. The vehicles will also be on display during the Open Day in Skopje, scheduled for Saturday at the Army Stadium in the City Park.
