Petkov: Any proposal from the EU must be discussed by Bulgarian Parliament
Sofia, 15 June 2022 (MIA) – Only the MPs must decide about the issue on North Macedonia, said Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov ahead of Wednesday’s  regular government session.

Petkov pointed out that the government on Wednesday will discuss an item on the agenda, which provides that all proposals on the topic coming from the French EU Presidency or a member state be discussed by the parliamentary Foreign Policy Committee.

The Prime Minister noted that the draft-decision to be discussed today will contain two points.

“Item one – any proposal made by the French EU Presidency, a member state or the European Commission to approve start of European Union accession negotiations with the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Albania, to be sent immediately by the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Bulgaria to the meeting of the European Union.

Item two – the representatives of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Committee of Permanent Representatives and in the General Affairs Council not to agree with the proposals under item one until they are discussed in the National Assembly. When rejected by the National Assembly, to express a negative position on them,” said Kiril Petkov.

According to him, a decision formulated in this way avoids any speculation that the current government will do anything on the topic of the Republic of North Macedonia and its European integration, and only the Bulgarian Parliament will work on it.
