Angelovska-Bezhoska - Superti: SEPA is a historic step, banks must prepare

Skopje, 16 May 2025 (MIA) – Joining the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) is a historic step on the path toward the European Union and a confirmation of the reforms led by the National Bank to meet the high European regulatory requirements and standards in the field of payments, noted the Governor of the National Bank, Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska, and Director for Western Balkans at the Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST), Valentina Superti.

At the meeting, as reported by the central bank, it was underscored that the National Bank will continue its efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability and address challenges across all areas of operation, in order to ensure alignment with European standards.

They also discussed further activities related to SEPA accession, which enables domestic banks to access European payment systems, even though the country is not yet an EU member state.

The Governor noted that the central bank, together with the banking sector, is working to ensure full readiness for integration into SEPA by October 2025, which is the earliest possible date for banks from Western Balkan countries to join.

Governor Angelovska-Bezhoska briefed Director Superti on the latest macroeconomic indicators, which point to strengthened macroeconomic stability and enhanced stability of the banking system.

They expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the National Bank’s project activities, supported by the EU, aimed at aligning with the highest European standards and regulations, as well as their commitment to deepening cooperation.
