People should be at ease from both security and economic point of view, says Kovachevski

Skopje, 30 December 2022 (MIA) – Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski says the war in Ukraine is unpredictable, but reassures the citizens that they should be at ease from both security and economic point of view.

“The war has made us realize that we had made the right decision to join the largest military and defense alliance in the world. Our country is safe, our borders are NATO borders and from that point of view, no one should have any dilemma as to whether something might happen to us,” Kovachevski said in an interview with the weekly magazine “Fokus”.

Asked about recent developments in Kosovo, the PM says he believes a solution lies in a EU-mediated dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo. All sides should strive to establish peace in the north of Kosovo, according to him.

In the interview, Kovachevski also touches upon the current energy crisis and the government’s upcoming plans and projects. Amongst other things, he says that “as a citizen I expect to have a functioning judicial government and I expect justice.”

The PM also mentions the ruling handed down in the mass wiretapping case. “The government cannot interfere into the judiciary. It is up to the judicial system through a transparent process to explain to the citizens the decisions it has been making and to work hard to improve so as to increase the public trust and to provide fair conditions for everyone to be equal before the Constitution,” Kovachevski states.

Asked about the visit by an American team to review corruption-related cases, PM Kovachevski says he hadn’t met with them, adding: “The experiences from the EU and the US are of huge importance and are welcome.”
