Pendarovski: Approach of new Bulgarian PM that history shouldn’t be only channel of communication acceptable
Pristina, 15 December 2021 (MIA) – President Stevo Pendarovski, who is paying an official visit to Kosovo on Wednesday, said in regard to the Skopje-Sofia dispute that he thinks the approach of new Bulgarian PM Kiril Petkov, who stressed that history shouldn’t be the only channel of communication between the two countries, is acceptable. “I think the approach of new Bulgarian PM Kiril Petkov, who stressed that history shouldn’t be the only channel of communication between the two countries, is acceptable. We should discuss infrastructure, energy connection, economy, trade exchange, EU integration, human rights and freedoms and the pandemic. That’s a modern approach and I support it. Of course, I don’t’ support the six-months waiting period he announced, I think we can resolve the issue much quicker,” Pendarovski noted. The President, at a joint press conference with Kosovo counterpart Vjosa Osmani, also underlined that prolonging dispute resolution wouldn’t destabilize the country. “Failing to get a date to start talks for a certain period of time, failing to resolve the dispute with Bulgaria and being left waiting at EU’s door longer would not destabilize the security in North Macedonia,” he told reporters. Pendarovski reiterated that the country faced a similar situation in 2008, when Greece vetoed its NATO membership. “We resolved the dispute ten years later. In those ten years, the region remained stable. So, I don’t know what these assumptions are based on, but I do know that waiting longer to resolve the dispute with Bulgaria or start EU talks will not destabilize the country. Citizens can rest assured of this,” Pendarovski said at the news briefing.
