Parliament Speaker Gashi meets EU Ambassador Geer

Skopje, 7 June 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi met Friday with the European Union’s Ambassador to North Macedonia, David Geer, and representatives of the EU delegation.

"After wishing him success in the post, Ambassador Geer said he expects the new parliamentary composition to work devotedly in fulfilling the country's strategic goal for full-fledged EU membership," the Parliament said in a press release.

According to Parliament, Speaker Gashi thanked for the clear and continued support from the European institutions during the enlargement process.

"Gashi welcomed the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which, according to him, should further encourage the region to prepare for EU membership by implementing reforms for the rule of law, strengthening democratic institutions, fight against corruption, and economic development," the press release said.

Gashi and Geer also discussed the possibility of extending the Jean Monet Dialogue, which they assessed as efficient and effective, with Gashi noting that the new parliamentary composition has already implemented the new Rules of Procedure.

The Parliament Speaker also expressed his satisfaction that the EU's new enlargement methodology envisions a strengthened role of parliaments in negotiations and ensured that the new parliamentary composition will be fully invested in the process.

According to the press release, Gashi and Geer also exchanged opinions on the coming European elections, as well as the formation of a new government in the country. They also discussed the procedures for adopting laws in Parliament, strengthening its executive authority, and additional harmonization with European legislation.ssh/ad/
