Parliament passes declaration marking NATO membership anniversary

Skopje, 28 March 2024 (MIA) – The Parliament at a session Thursday passed a declaration on marking the fourth anniversary of North Macedonia’s NATO membership and the Alliance’s 75th anniversary.

Parliament Speaker Jovan Mitreski, who also proposed the motion, said the legislative house by passing the declaration confirmed the commitment to playing a serious and important role in providing regional and global peace and stability.

Four years after joining the Alliance, he said, the decisions made in the process of becoming a member had been hard, but worth it.

According to the Speaker, the support for the declaration will send a message to the NATO partners that North Macedonia is a committed and reliable partner and ally.

“Additionally, by adopting this declaration at the end of the term we are leaving a message to the future legislators and the future generations in general that we’re not changing the direction and that we, the legislators, are recognizing the strategic values,” Mitreski said adding they are fully committed to implementing them.

Before the document was passed, Levica MP Dimitar Apasiev said that his party as being anti-NATO called for the declaration to be removed from today’s agenda, calling NATO “an aggressor and violator of international law.”
