Our goal is to be a leader in green energy: minister

Skopje, 4 October 2024 (MIA) – Sustainable, base and domestic energy will be a priority of the new government, which includes the construction of base energy facilities, gas cogeneration power plants, wind and solar power plans and modernization of the coal power plant in Bitola, REK, alignment with the top ecological standards and final completion of the gas pipeline network. We have a vision to turn the country from energy importer to a country that produces enough energy to meet its own needs and maybe to even export it one day, Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska said Friday.

To that end, she stated, capital investments will be implemented and the concept for forming the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Minerals is the first step to overhaul the energy sector through monitoring, planning, realization and control.

“The gas pipeline network, whose construction was kicked off 13 years ago, is of key importance to lower energy consumption and to construct new capacities,” Bozhinovska told a news conference on the government’s first 100 days in office.

Transparency, she pledged, will be a priority because the public needs to know what is happening in the energy sector.

“Also, we make efforts to speed up works and finally complete key interconnections and long-term investments in renewable energy sources. Our goal is to be a leader in green energy creating a sustainable future not only for present but also for future generation,” said Bozhinovska.

According to her, more attention will be paid to energy efficiency, including installation of photovoltaics on the rooftops of homes, kindergartens, schools and other public facilities,” the Minister stated, adding the government will focus on shaping the energy’s future.
