Osmani - Popescu: OSCE committed to finding comprehensive, sustainable solution to Transdniestrian conflict

Skopje, 14 February 2023 (MIA) - Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani, who is paying an official visit to Moldova, met with Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu. In his role as OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Osmani stressed the importance of the field missions of the world's largest regional security organization and their direct impact on people's lives, expressing gratitude for the support that Moldova gives to Ukrainian refugees.

"Russia's military aggression against Ukraine has had an impact on your country and has caused major security, political, economic and social difficulties. The resilience and open hearts of the people of Moldova have impressed not only me, but also many others in the OSCE region. You provided incredible support to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees when most needed, for which I personally, as well as our entire organization, are very grateful," said Osmani.

Osmani defined his visit to Moldova as a clear signal for the support of North Macedonia's OSCE Chairpersonship in terms of resolving the challenges faced by Chișinău, particularly regarding the process of resolving the Transdniestrian conflict, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.

"OSCE is committed to finding a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Transdniestrian conflict. Any resolution must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova and provide a special status for Transdniestria within its internationally recognized borders," Osmani said.

He pointed out that the organization is aware of the consequences that the military aggression against Ukraine has caused on the process of resolving the issue with Transdniestria, reiterating that the 5+2 format remains the only agreed path forward.

"We will support any positive steps for implementation of previous agreements and finding new ones," Osmani added.

He noted that the OSCE mission in Moldova must continue to facilitate 1+1 meetings and Working Groups, and support efforts to build trust.

Osmani added that OSCE remains committed to strengthening cooperation and promoting peace and stability. He pointed out that the successful track record of the OSCE mission to Moldova proves the power of the motto "It's About People", noting that he supports its continued mandate to serve those most in need.
