Osmani: OSCE provides support in making Majevica mine-free by end of 2024

Skopje, 12 May 2023 (MIA) - Foreign Minister and OSCE Chairman-in-Office Bujar Osmani donated on Friday two mine clearance vehicles to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Center, providing support in effectively clearing the Majevica area of unexploded land mines left over from the 1992-1995 war.

"These specialized vehicles are a donation from the German government and show that the OSCE provides support, cooperating with local authorities, organizations, affected communities and international partners," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.

The aim is to make Majevica mine-free by the end of 2024, reads the press release, and the donation will be of great importance to complete the process, both for the population in the area and for the deminers working on the ground.

"Achieving this goal is of crucial importance, so that the people of this region can live a normal life. We send an important message that the Mission is here "about the people", because they are looking for our support. This is not just about Majevica, but we are sending a strong message about the critical importance and value of peace," said Osmani.

He added that Majevica is one of the few examples in Bosnia and Herzegovina where municipalities are taking concrete steps towards reconciliation. Thanks to the support of the Mission in promoting cooperation between municipalities, the Foreign Ministry adds, the mayors of five municipalities in Majevica showed great leadership and joined forces to work together for the benefit of their citizens.

"Their actions and values perfectly align with those of our OSCE Chairmanship, i.e. 'It's About People'," Osmani said.
