Opposition coalition of ethnic Albanians leaves leaders' meeting due to SEC disagreement with Speaker

Skopje, 4 December 2023 (MIA) - The opposition coalition of ethnic Albanians "European Alliance of Change" left Monday the leaders' meeting because Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi had departed without discussing the issue of the vacant State Election Commission (SEC) post.

"The opposition coalition left the leaders' meeting after Talat Xhaferi had departed because the SEC issue was about to be discussed. He abandoned the session during our elaboration and we left afterwards because we did not have anyone to counter arguments with," said MP Izet Mexhiti.

The coalition believes that the SEC post, which has been vacant since Krenar Lloga of the Alliance of Albanians was elected Justice Minister, belongs to them.

"We believe that Xhaferi has been delaying the issue for a long time and we think the intention is to not elect a SEC member," added Mexhiti.

The coalition demands that early parliamentary elections take place on April 28, on the same day with the runoff for the presidential elections. On the caretaker government, they said it should take office, with opposition posts filled by their candidates, not people coming from the opposition of ethnic Macedonians.

Another of their demands is the option of diaspora voting, either by mail or electronically.

On a separate note, Mexhiti extended condolences on behalf of the parties to the families of Vanja Gjorchevska and Panche Zhezhovski, who were killed last week, saying the authorities have been slow in their response to the case.
