Skopje, 13 November 2024 (MIA) - The 80th anniversary from the World War II liberation of Skopje was observed by wreath-laying ceremonies at the monument of the city liberators and the partisan cemetery on Wednesday.
Skopje Mayor Danela Arsovska said the 80-year jubilee is a symbol of victory, marking the spirit, resolve and sacrifice of generations who did a lot, adding that "our Skopje should be loved by investing our efforts for a more beautiful city that will make each of us proud".
"Let the memory of our ancestors and their deeds be everlasting, and let all citizens of Skopje and Macedonia be united in the efforts to build a better place to live, but also a brighter place for future generations. Let's prove that the citizens of Skopje know how to work together," said Mayor Arsovska.
Let this anniversary, she added, serve as a reminder that we must assume the task of building on what those before left us through their sacrifice.
Veterans Union president Naum Bureski said many victims perished in the fight for Skopje, so that the victory of a great city is celebrated today.
"People came from all over Macedonia to celebrate victory in Skopje. For the first time on record, we started to talk about Macedonian schools, universities, culture, education, health, statehood institutions. Our own republic. I am Macedonian, my children will be Macedonians and this homeland cannot be taken away by anyone. A message for parties and the authorities - unite and build this country, because we do not have a spare one," said Bureski.
Earlier in the day, delegations also laid wreaths at the monument of General Mihajlo Apostolski, whereas a formal academy and presentation of the November 13 awards will take place in the Macedonian Philharmonic later this evening.
