North Macedonia ranks 3rd in Europe according to gun death rates

Skopje, 25 June 2024 (MIA) - With 12.25 gun deaths per million inhabitants, North Macedonia ranks third in Europe according to gun deaths rates, shows an analysis of Landgeist, a statistical portal, based on data of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, based in Seattle University.

Turkey with 18.16 gun deaths per million inhabitants and Albania with 15.20 have higher gun death rates. Of the countries in the region, Serbia records a gun death rate of 10.44, Bulgaria 7.69 and Greece 4.35.

Great Britain (0.66), Iceland (0.87) and Norway (0.92) record some of the lowest rates. Police forces in these three countries are the only ones in Europe that don't carry a gun.

In general, gun death rates in Europe are significantely low. Low gun death rates are also reported in all countries in Africa, Asia and Oceania (where there are no armed conflicts.)

Higher gun death rates are recorded in North and South America, where they are higher than the one in Turkey, apart from Canada and Cuba.

In comparison, the gun death rate in the United States is 41.69.

Landgeist notes that the gun death rates were recorded before the start of the war in Ukraine. Suicides by firearms are not included in this analysis.
