Skopje, 9 October 2024 (MIA) - The Republic of North Macedonia became Wednesday a new member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027, after it received 168 "yes" votes during the UN General Assembly in New York, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has said.

Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski wrote in a Facebook post that the support by UN member-states represents a recognition for the country's contribution as a committed promoter and champion of human rights and freedoms.

He adds that one of the main goals after this diplomatic success will be the active participation in the Council, contributing to the global promotion of human rights and improvement of the state of play across the globe.

In its latest national report for the Universal Periodic Review presented before the Geneva-based Council, the country is ranked high on the list of states that respect and guarantee human rights, and is assessed as a qualified candidate that meets the requirements to be part of this body.

This is the Republic of North Macedonia's second election as member of UN Human Rights Council after 2014-2016.
