No new proposal for lifting Bulgaria's veto as French EU presidency ends

No new proposal for lifting Bulgaria's veto as French EU presidency ends
Brussels, 30 June 2022 (MIA) - There is no fresh initiative for lifting of the Bulgarian veto hindering North Macedonia's EU integration bid as the French EU presidency is coming to an end Thursday. The Skopje government insists that an official proposal for closing the dispute with Bulgaria and the opening of membership negotiations hasn't been received yet all the while Sofia authorities stay mum after Parliament endorsed the "French proposal" last week and the Kiril Petkov-government lost a no confidence vote. French diplomats at the EU headquarters are unaware of a new initiative to resolve the Sofia-Skopje dispute after the visit of the Macedonian delegation to Bulgaria, MIA’s Brussels correspondent reports. According to MIA’s information, the process is entirely in the hands of Sofia and Skopje, and partly in Paris, mainly with French President Emmanuel Macron whose proposal was rejected last week by North Macedonia. North Macedonia's government outlined its red lines: the language, the Constitution, the protocol, history, adding that it was ready to consider a new proposal if it were put on the table. Speaking at a Q&A session in Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski reiterated that ideas that fail to provide protection of the Macedonian language, the Macedonian identity are not acceptable as it is also unacceptable bilateral issues to be included in multilateral negotiations with the EU. According to media reports, a Macedonian delegation paid a visit to Sofia on Monday. No outcome from the meetings has been reported since then. EU ambassadors met on Wednesday in Brussels. There is no information as to whether Bulgaria and North Macedonia were on the agenda. There was also no talk of a new French proposal, a diplomatic source from a EU member state told MIA. President Stevo Pendarovski, who is attending the NATO Summit in Madrid, met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss his country's EU integration process and the Bulgarian blockade. "Germany's support remains strong and vital for our EU integration process and the opening of accession talks with the EU," Pendarovski's office said. There was no mention of the French proposal or any other solution for a settlement. According to VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski, it is impossible Skopje and Sofia to settle the dispute by the end of France's EU presidency. France on Thursday concludes its six-month presidency of the Council of the EU and will hand over the presidency to the Czech Republic as of July 1. Earlier this month, the government in Prague presented the priorities of its presidency, which do not include EU enlargement with the Western Balkans.
