Sofia, 9 December 2021 (MIA) – There is no change in Bulgaria’s position, there is nothing the public doesn’t know, said caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev on Thursday. Yanev told lawmakers that the government has defined the position that will be presented before the General Affairs Council in Brussels next week. “The things we are seeing – the media enthusiasm demonstrated by foreign leaders – should not be discussed in detail by the Bulgarian parliament, because we cannot tell our counterparts in the respective governments what to do and how to do it,” said Yanev. He added that Bulgaria’s position on North Macedonia and the Western Balkans has been consistent. “Not only North Macedonia, but also the whole of Western Balkans, deserves a European future. Bulgaria has not only declared this over the years, but also contributed to the countries’ preparations on the way to their European future,” said Yanev. On North Macedonia, he said the Friendship Treaty was signed in 2017 and Skopje, “has not met its tasks”, noting that Bulgaria’s position is well-known and made public through the so-called ‘5+1 points’. “This is the formula for continuation of the talks and we hope for a well-intentioned relationship with our colleagues from North Macedonia in order to have this necessary dialogue, to overcome differences, to set a date for the first intergovernmental conference and start EU talks with the country,” underlined Yanev.
