Skopje, 2 December 2025 (MIA) – Traffic safety is a shared responsibility and our actions must be coordinated, systematic and based on modern standards, Deputy PM and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said at the opening of the National Conference on Traffic Safety in Local Self-Government held in Skopje on Tuesday.
Nikoloski said the road infrastructure being developed must be safe by design in order to minimize risks and ensure safe movement for everyone.
At the conference, he outlined Ministry of Transport’s strategic projects aimed at improving traffic safety, noting that the National Transport Strategy 2018-2030 sets an ambitious goal to reduce road fatalities by 50 percent by 2030.
He said the national road-safety regulations are being improved through legal amendments, cooperation with municipalities on local projects, and the preparation of rulebook on cycling infrastructure.
Nikoloski announced that an Intelligent Transport System is expected to be introduced next year on Corridor 10, with the tender process now nearing completion, and that work is under way on a similar system for Corridor 8.
“All of this requires a lot of time, dedication and funding, but above all coordination and an improvement of citizens’ culture,” Nikoloski said, adding that “we are facing a phenomenon where everyone supports respecting the law, as long as the law does not apply to them.”
He called on everyone to focus on long-term goals and stressed that saving human lives has no price.
The conference will continue with speeches by Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski, Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski and Goran Angelovski, head of the Republic Council for Road Traffic Safety.
