Nikoloski: Gov't intends to organize direct overseas, intercontinental flights from Skopje Airport

Skopje, 17 October 2024 (MIA) – The Government intends to organize direct overseas, intercontinental flights from Skopje Airport, which will be a unique case not only for the country, but also for the region. We have already started working on it and I think it is a huge ambition, but we will benefit greatly from it, Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said on Thursday.

He told Thursday's conference organized by the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations (IFATCA) and the Macedonian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association (MATCA) in Skopje that it will be of great importance for the country, because of the diaspora that wants to fly directly from Skopje, but also to attract new tourists, not only in the country, but also in the region.

"Air traffic control is a specific profession that requires excellent education and high professionalism. I am glad that Macedonia has the privilege to host this European Regional Meeting of the Air Traffic Controllers' Associations, where I believe that new experiences and practices in this sector will be presented," Nikoloski told the opening of IFATCA's European Regional Meeting.

He pointed out that it is a key sector that is of great importance for the Ministry of Transport and the Government.

"The highest standards must be applied in your profession, because neither mistakes nor volunteerism is allowed. That is why we want to support our domestic and international professionals in this sector," Nikoloski added.

He noted that the country wants to increase air traffic from the two Macedonian airports and have greater passenger flow and that's why, he added, the Government started a new campaign for subsidizing flights, the evaluation of which should be completed in the coming days.
