Nikoloski and Stoilkovikj discuss gas interconnection with Serbian Minister

Belgrade, 5 September 2024 (MIA) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Inter-Community Relations Ivan Stoilkovikj met Thursday with the Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedović Handanović as part of their visit to Belgrade, MIA’s Belgrade correspondent reports.

The Serbian Minister extended congratulations over the creation of the new Government and said she expects the good cooperation in energy and mining to continue, as well as in the realization of joint projects, including the Serbia – North Macedonia gas interconnection.

“For a secure supply of natural gas to the regional market, we need infrastructure and alternative supply routes. The construction of the Serbia – North Macedonia gas interconnection will ensure a diversification of the routes and sources of supply, it will improve the security of the supply for Serbia, North Macedonia and the entire region, and will enable further development of the distributive network in southern Serbia and the integration of the existing and future natural gas storage capacities in a single energy system,” Minister Đedović Handanović said, according to a press release by her Ministry.

She stressed that the two countries foster good cooperation in the Energy Community as well, considering the similar energy mix and the challenges they face, and voiced expectations that the cooperation will continue.

Deputy PM Nikoloski voiced satisfaction over the strengthened cooperation and noted that the construction of the Serbia – North Macedonia gas interconnection is a strategic project. Nikoloski said he expects the gas pipeline between North Macedonia and Greece to be completed in 2025, creating a natural corridor for the transport of natural gas from Greece, through North Macedonia and to Serbia, which would be very significant for regional energy security.
