NATO Secretary General calls for Kabul airport to continue operations
Brussels, 24 August 2021 (dpa/MIA) - NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has joined calls for the continued operation of Kabul airport in order to support airlifts out of the country, during comments at talks among G7 leaders.
Stoltenberg said that several hundred NATO staff and contractors had provided critical services, such as air traffic control, fuel supply, and communications at the airport, according to alliance headquarters.
He also said that NATO has also taken on a coordinating role, to ensure that people could be evacuated as effectively as possible.
Stoltenberg also said NATO’s main priority was to make sure that Afghanistan does not again become a platform for international terrorists.
