Brussels, 4 September 2024 (MIA) - Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani kicked off Wednesday his first working visit to Brussels, meeting with European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi. Talks focused on the ongoing European integration process and next steps towards further progress, the Ministry of European Affairs said in a press release.
Minister Murtezani highlighted North Macedonia's firm commitment to the EU accession process, as well as the country's readiness to align with the Union's standards.
Commissioner Várhelyi welcomed the Government's contribution in the context of the intensive preparations for the EU's Growth Plan for the Western Balkan countries, stressing the need to take the next steps - meeting the benchmarks for opening the First Cluster. He pointed out that the EU remains committed to supporting North Macedonia in overcoming the remaining challenges on its European path, especially through technical and financial assistance in deepening institutional reforms.
Constitutional amendments were one of the major topics discussed at the meeting, regarding which Murtezani said it was crucial to foster a positive political climate and secure public support for the changes, underscoring the Government's readiness for a constructive dialogue with Bulgaria.
Interlocutors also exchange views on the EU's Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which is a key mechanism to increase investments and strengthen the economic resilience of the countries in the region. Várhelyi welcomed North Macedonia's active role in regional initiatives and alignment with the EU's strategic agenda for 2024-2029, noting the continued European support, especially in areas that are key to North Macedonia's transformation: the rule of law, public administration reforms and fight against corruption. Murtezani stressed it is important that these reforms are not only implemented, but also deeply rooted in the social flows.
In terms of good neighbourly relations, Murtezani reiterated North Macedonia's commitment to strengthen and deepen them, noting that such relations are fundamental to regional stability, economic prosperity, as well as the Union's credibility. Minister Murtezani reaffirmed readiness for decisive action in the context of the next steps related to the country's European file, essentially working on reforms to ensure stable progress in achieving the Government's strategic goal – European Union membership, reads the press release.
