Mucunski at Hungarian Diplomatic Academy: Our approach protects merit-based EU enlargement

Skopje, 9 September 2024 (MIA) — Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski on a working visit to Budapest addressed Monday students and diplomats at the Hungarian Diplomatic Academy, according to an official press release.

In his remarks, FM Mucunski spoke about the long process of the country's accession to the EU, highlighting the decades of commitment to this goal as well as the numerous concessions Macedonian society had made in the meantime.

He said the EU accession process needed to be more predictable.

"Our approach essentially protects the EU's enlargement policy, based on values and merits, given that the risk of our case being abused by anti-EU factors is high," the foreign minister said.

Mucunski also stressed the importance of good relations between the two countries, celebrating 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, and thanked Hungary for the support at the political, economic and multilateral levels.

"Although our relations are continuously friendly, I am looking forward to a new dynamic soon as a result of the two prime ministers' commitment to establishing a strategic relationship between the two countries," he said.

Minister Mucunski's address was followed by a discussion during which he answered questions regarding illegal migration and border security, regional energy security, and expectations and risks on the EU path, the MFAFT release says. mr/
