Motion on amending Electoral Code to introduce single electoral district in Parliament session's agenda

Skopje, 12 June 2025 (MIA) – A fast-tracked motion on amending the Electoral Code, filed by LDP leader and MP Monika Zajkova, proposing the establishment of a single electoral district, is in the agenda of Thursday’s Parliament session.

The establishment of a single electoral district aims at introducing equal value of the voters’ vote regardless of their geographical distribution, introducing preferential voting, allowing smaller political parties to be more represented, strengthening of the confidence in the election process and improving political inclusivity, says the motion posted on the assembly’s website.

The proposed legislation will also contribute to increasing inclusion of the voters in the election process especially by improving the prospect of independent candidates and civil initiatives partaking.

The Democratic Alliance also announced it will file its motion to change the Electoral Code allowing a single electoral district to be introduced. The Party of the Movement of Turks (TPH) and the Democratic Reconstruction of Macedonia (DOM) said they endorse the opening of a wide dialogue over the changes to the electoral law.

Today’s agenda also includes a draft proposal on the law to support the fatalities of the Kochani nightclub fire and the members of their families in first reading, filed by SDSM. The fire, which broke out in a packed nightclub on March 16 in Kochani, killed 62 young concert-goers leaving close to 200 injured with burns. More than 40 people are suspected so far as part of the investigation of grave crimes against general security.
